This is a fascinating & enthralling hobby that often becomes addictive. Family History is one of those subjects where anything that happened yesterday is history, & as such could affect a relative of yours or someone within the group. The topics we discuss are far reaching, even if it doesn't directly affect your family now, it might do in the future. In recent years it has become much easier to research from home, using the internet, but it is not impossible to research without the powers of the internet. Here in Ash U3A Family History group we have a large membership with a wide range of knowledge & experience. The group is lead by Heather with Peter backing her up & collecting the subscriptions, [we have to cover the hire of the hall & cost of speakers], several members are in the background ready to step in & help when & where necessary. Generally each term will have two guest speakers & a visit to a place of interest for the majority of the members. Participation is encouraged at general meetings when members can ask for help with problems or can take the opportunity to boast about an amazing ancestor or success with a tricky piece of research. These also give you the chance to share with others, be that your own research or to explain what you would like to find if just starting. Swapping & sharing ideas, sources, assisting each other with suggestions for future research & that 'Eureka' moment having found that missing piece of information you so wanted. Discuss the aims of your research, the various computer programmes to record it, Occupations, Folklore from where your family came from, listen to how someone overcame a hurdle, the answer to your query is normally out there somewhere, but you haven't thought to look so far. Sometimes we might have a podcast when we listen to a recorded talk on a subject & then discuss that subject. We help each other to make progress with our research, to learn something & to enjoy ourselves. Numerous Reference Guides on aspects of researching family history are available to members, via email. The on-line Forum (for current members only) has been set up for members to ask questions or mention events or items of interest. |
